The SWISH technique is a technique used in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). It’s purpose is to help individuals change their patterns of unwanted thoughts and behaviours. The unwanted negative image is replaced by a wanted positive image in the mind.
The SWISH technique in NLP begins with the identification of trigger e.g., a person feeling anxious and stressed out while giving a presentation. This is followed by the creation of a clear unwanted image of that uneasiness or anxiousness in the mind. In opposite to that unwanted image, a vivid wanted image of being calm and confident during the presentation is created in the mind. When both the images slowly come closer to one another, the unwanted image begins to fade away while the wanted image grows bigger and bigger. When both images come very close, the word “SWISH” is said in a form of a whisper, to diminish the unwanted image of anxiety and replace it with the wanted image of being confident, relaxed, and in control. This technique makes the individual feel relieved, positive, and motivated. They feel like having a sense of control over their thoughts and feelings. This process is repeated until it leads to the replacement of the negative image in the individual’s mind with a positive and desired image.
