The handshake induction is a rapid hypnosis technique that uses an interrupted handshake to create confusion, opening the subconscious mind to suggestion. The hypnotist initiates a normal handshake but interrupts it by holding the client’s hand in an unexpected way, breaking the familiar pattern and causing momentary confusion. This confusion allows the client’s conscious mind to “short-circuit,” leaving them more susceptible to hypnosis.
After interrupting the handshake, the hypnotist draws the client’s attention to their hand, creating a focal point for relaxation. Suggestions are made regarding the sensations in their hand—such as it feeling lighter or heavier—to further engage the subconscious mind. As the client becomes more relaxed, the hypnotist deepens the trance by suggesting that the hand may float or lower, guiding them into an even deeper state of relaxation.
Once the client is in a trance, the hypnotist delivers therapeutic suggestions tailored to the client’s needs (e.g., boosting confidence or reducing anxiety). The induction ends by gently lowering the hand and reinforcing the relaxation state, followed by a slow, guided return to full awareness.
The handshake induction is highly effective due to its use of confusion and pattern disruption, making it a powerful tool for quickly inducing a trance state.
