My Friend John induction is used to create a sense of familiarity within the client. In this technique, the therapist tells his client, a story about his friend named “John”. The name “John” can be replaced by any other name.
In the Pakistani culture, if the client is a male, names such as “Ali, Ahmed, Taha” can be used, and if the client is a female, names such as “Amna, Esha, Sarah” can be used. The client can be asked if he or she is okay with the particular name being used, as there is a possibility that the client may not have good experience or relationship with that particular name, which could result in the ineffectiveness of this induction.
The purpose of this induction is to help the client feel a sense of connection and security. It makes the client more open to the suggestions, as he may find the scenario more relatable and familiar to his current situation.
The story being narrated may help to deepen the state of trance as it involves the visualization of the story, making it easier for the therapist to access the client’s subconscious mind.
The character “John” is portrayed in such a way e.g. the struggles of John and the way he overcomes those challenges and how he thinks and feels about those tough situations, may make the client feel like he himself is that character, which can lead to positive and effective outcomes to his problems and concerns. The client might feel more relaxed, calm, and in control.
