Confusion induction in hypnosis is a method to overload the conscious mind with a lot of information, making the pathway of the unconscious mind open to deliver therapeutic suggestions effectively. This induction bypasses the logical part of the mind and allows the suggestions to reach the subconscious mind easily and more effectively. This induction is very useful for clients who over-think or show strong resistance in entering a state of trance.
An interesting aspect of confusion induction is the way it makes the logical and analytical human mind i.e., the conscious mind get stuck in a pattern that does not make any sense, by using paradoxes and ambiguities to make it enter a phase of cognitive overload. The brain plays a very incredible role when faced with ambiguity. Rather than shutting down completely, it allows the subconscious mind to take over the confusing situation, which then opens doors for trance to take place.
Erickson defined confusion as a doorway to learning. Thus, this induction makes the client enter a state of confusion, allowing deeper insights and therapeutic healing.
