Hypnosis is effective for managing pain. Two main techniques help to manage pain.
    > Hypnotic anesthesia
The therapist helps the client visualize a piece of ice placed on the body part where the pain persists. Through indirect suggestions, the client is guided to feel a sense of numbness in that area. Combining it with the dissociation and distraction techniques, the client can feel a sense of dissociation with the pain, which can gradually lead to loss of sensation in that specific area.
This technique has been used in hospital and clinical settings, where numbness is created through hypnosis, and the patients experience a considerable decrease in pain or complete numbness in the area, without requiring any anesthetics. It is ideal for acute pains during surgeries or dental procedures.
    > Pain perception modification
The therapist helps the client to modify their perception of pain, instead of eliminating it. It helps to alter the intensity of pain or the emotional response towards it. It makes the pain more bearable and reduces the level of distress.
The indirect suggestions and metaphors are used to reframe the pain, making it more manageable. The therapist guides the client to think that their pain is something that can be adjusted, such as a volume or dial control, which can be turned down on their choice. This helps to view the pain neutrally and reduces the emotional feelings associated with the pain.
The therapist can help to modify the sensory quality of the pain, by guiding the client to visualize their pain as some shape, color, or temperature, and then slowly altering their characteristics. For example, the pain can be described as smooth and stable instead of sharp and throbbing.
This technique is useful for chronic pain and long-lasting conditions such as migraines, arthritis, or fibromyalgia. It helps to change the patient’s perception of pain, making it more manageable.
