Age regression is a therapeutic technique where the hypnotherapist guides the client to revisit his early areas of life such as their childhood or past experiences. This is done to bring their unconscious thoughts, emotions, memories, or traumas on the surface level, that might still be having an impact on their present life behaviors, feelings, thoughts, and emotions.
The purpose of age regression is to address the issues that are deeply rooted, in a safe and secure environment. These issues may include self-limiting beliefs, anxieties, fears, or traumas. The client gains insights about the past events, discovers what has been causing them the specific issues, which then leads to healing, recovery, and growth.
For example, a client with fear of being alone in a crowd may be guided to go back to an important event in their childhood, such as being lost in a crowd after accidently letting go of their mother’s hand. During the regression process, they are asked to re-experience those feelings, emotions, and sensations related to the event. These can include the fear of being there all alone, not able to see the mother, unable to decide where to go and whom to ask for help, crying, shaking, and looking at unknown faces in the crowd, feeling helpless and powerless, and longing to reunite with the mother. The therapist helps the client to process these thoughts, feelings, and emotions, providing with a new positive perspective, such as feeling safe, in control, and confident. This would help to reduce the overall impact of the fear in present-life situations.
