Uptime downtime induction begins by shifting an individual’s awareness from his external to internal environment, then internal to external, and so on. This process continues, until the individual enters a state of trance. It is a light form of trance.
During uptime, the hypnotherapist asks the client to focus on the external environment. It includes looking around the room and noticing different sounds, lights, and objects in that room. Uptime helps to keep the mind alert and awake.
During downtime, the client is asked to focus on their internal world including their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations such as breathing or heartbeat. Downtime helps to delve inside, deeper into a relaxed state.
    For example,
I want you to be seated comfortably, and focus on the sounds in the room. You might focus on the humming sound of the fan, the tick of the clock, or the chirps of any insects or birds at a distance. Allow yourself to observe and hear everything around you. (uptime)
Now, I want you to close your eyes gently, and shift your focus on your breathing. Notice the rhythm of your breathing. Feel your lungs being filled with air as you breath in. Slowly exhale through your mouth, and feel the air leaving your body. Allow yourself to relax. (downtime)
As you continue to relax, I want you to slowly open your eyes, and come back to the present moment, and again notice the sounds around you. Notice each and every sound in the room. Feel yourself awake and alert. (uptime)
Again, allow yourself to close your eyes and focus on your breathing. With each breath, feel the relaxation getting deeper and deeper. Just allow yourself to delve deeper into yourself. Let your body and mind relax. (downtime)
As the client becomes more and more relaxed, uptime is reduced and downtime is increased. The process continues until the client enters a state of trance.
