The human brain comprises of 4 states of waves.
The first state is the beta state (~15 to 40 Hz) where the mind is fully awake and actively engages in various activities such as driving a car, walking along the road, taking a class etc.
The second state is the alpha state (~9 – 14 Hz) which is a lighter version of trance. The mind is involved in daydreaming i.e., to focus one’s attention on one’s inner feelings and thoughts instead of the outside environment. It is a state of calm and inner relaxation.
The third state is the theta state (~5 – 8 Hz) which is a deeper level of trance. The subconscious mind is very active during this state while the conscious mind is less active as compared to the subconscious mind. It is a state of deeper inner relaxation and calmness. It is the most receptive time for suggestions and affirmations to enter into the subconscious mind.
The fourth state is the delta state (~1 1/2 – 4 Hz). It is the state of being asleep. During this state, the consciuous mind is not active at all. The individual is in a deep state of relaxation and this state involves having dreams.
Alpha and theta waves experienced during sleep and waking up are the best times to practice self hypnosis or meditation to promote positive thoughts and suggestions for a good and healthy sleep and a productive day.
Thus, it can be concluded that trance and sleep are somehow related to one another and vary as the different states of the brain waves.
