When an individual is being hypnotized, he or she may exhibit some signs of being in a state of trance. It is not necessary that all of the signs have to be present to consider the person in a state of trance. These signs can be recognized and identified by an experienced hypnotherapist.
Some of the signs of being in a state of trance include:
    1) The body posture becomes calm. The muscles of the body become relaxed and comfortable. It is noticeable in the arms and legs. This relaxation is more often noticed in the facial expressions of the client. The facial expressions become smooth and calm, and the jaw muscles become relaxed.
    2) The movement of the body becomes slow and calm. The individual does not display restless movements such as shaking of hands or feet.
    3) The eyes blink more slowly. The fluttering of eyelids or eye twitching takes place during the initial phase of trance. The eyes may roll upward, making only the white part of the eye visible, in case the trance is being induced with eyes open. The pupil also becomes dilated in this case.
4)The individual may be less distracted by the sounds around such as distractions or noises. They become more focused on the voice of their hypnotherapist during this deep relaxation.
    5) The voice becomes slow and soft, in the case where the client is asked to speak during trance.
    6) The heart rate lowers and the breathing becomes slower, deeper, and rhythmic.
    7) The swallowing reflex may slow down or disappear during trance.
