Binds and Double Binds are techniques used in therapy and communication to guide individuals towards a desired outcome.

Binds offer two or more choices that lead to the same result, allowing clients to feel they have control while subtly guiding them to a therapeutic goal. For example, “Would you like to start by discussing your feelings now or after exploring your thoughts?” Both options ultimately lead to discussing the issue.

Double Binds are a more advanced form of this technique, engaging both the conscious and unconscious mind. They present choices that appear to require conscious decision-making but subtly guide the unconscious towards a desired state. For example, “Would you like to begin relaxing now or after taking a few deep breaths?” This allows the unconscious mind to start relaxing regardless of the conscious choice.

Conscious-Unconscious Double Binds specifically target the conscious mind to make a logical choice while directing the unconscious mind toward a therapeutic outcome. For example, “As you decide whether to relax now or later, you might notice that part of you is already beginning to feel more at ease.” This technique uses positive framing and indirect suggestions to influence both levels of awareness effectively.
